•Only 18% of the total households have access to a sewer or septic tank
•82% of the Poverty Pockets have no access to piped water supply
•82% of the households let waste water flow into open drains and streets
Objectives of the Initiative
1.Demonstration of how communities can be empowered for acquiring adequate sanitation that meets their needs.
2.Generate felt demand for sanitation facilities in slums through awareness creation, health education, and capacity building.
3.Cover schools/ Anganwadis in slums with sanitation facilities and promote hygiene education and sanitary habits among students.
4.Encourage cost effective and appropriate technologies in all aspect of sanitation.
5.Ensure total open defecation free slums by constructing low cost individual HH latrines, community managed sanitation complexes wherever required and school sanitation complexes.
6.Safe disposal of domestic waste water.
7.Promote community managed household collection, segregation of solid waste and transportation to the municipal bins.
8.Development of community owned and managed water supply and environmental sanitation facilities. Including individual facilities, through setting up of proper and sustainable systems (including cost sharing), and community based operation and maintenance.
